Capacitive voltage transformer is mainly used for measurement of voltage and for protection purpose. It is also used for power line communication between different substations.

This IEC also gives us the parameters which should be marked on the nameplate of CVT or capacitive voltage transformer. The parameters are given below. we’ll see these parameters one by one.

  • Name of the manufacturer
  • Insulation level: The first value, which is mentioned in kV rms, is called as Power frequency withstand voltage, and the second one mentioned in kV peak is called as Lighting impulse voltage.
  • Standard: IEC 62271-5.
  • Capacitance: 4400pf, 6600pf & 8800pf.
  • Primary capacitance: C1 in pf
  • Secondary capacitance: C2 in pf
  • Highest system voltage: 145 kV, 245 kV, 440 kV
  • Rated Voltage factor: 1.2 cont & 1.5 Cont for 30 secs means - 120% of rated Voltage continuously and 150% of rated voltage continuously for 30 sec
  • Rated frequency: 50 Hz
  • Simultaneous burden: 100 VA / 0.2 means we can connect total 100VA on all the windings put together, and still get the accuracy of 0.2.
  • Thermal burden: 300 VA means Which indicates, we can take up to 300VA power from the CVT without increasing the temperature of CVT
  • Total weight of CVT: Kg
  • Total weight of oil: Kg . Oil is used in CVT for insulation & cooling purpose.
  • Year of manufacturing: YYYY
  • Accuracy class: 132/ Root 3 /// 100 / root 3
  • VA Burden: Standard values of secondary burdens as per IEC are, 1VA, 2.5VA, 5VA, 10VA, 25VA, 50VA, 100VA
  • Fuse rating: 0.2,0.5,1 and 3 (accuracy class of 0.2 indicates, voltage error equal to plus or minus 0.2% is allowed.)
